Rupin Pass Trek Itinerary – 7 Days

Tour Plan

Altitude: Approximately 7,700 ft
Drive Distance: Approximately 205 km
Drive Duration: Around 10 hours

The Rupin Pass adventure begins from Shimla. Trekkers will meet the Divintra Holidays team at the designated pickup point in Shimla at around 6:00 AM.

The journey takes you through beautiful mountain roads, remote villages and changing Himalayan landscapes before reaching Jiskun. The drive is long but scenic, giving you your first taste of the remote Himalayan environment.

Only dinner is included on this day. Breakfast and lunch are not included.

Overnight Stay: Homestay / Guest House in Jiskun

Important: Mobile network availability becomes limited in the remote sections. The last reliable network points may vary around Chanshal Pass, Jiskun and Jakha. The nearest ATM facility is at Rohru.

Trek Distance: Approximately 4 km
Trek Type: Uphill

After breakfast, begin your trek towards Jakha, one of the highest villages in the region. The trail passes through beautiful forests and mountain terrain, offering an introduction to the walking conditions of the Rupin Pass route.

The relatively short distance allows you to settle into the trekking rhythm while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Overnight Stay: Camp / Homestay, depending on the operational itinerary.

Today’s trail takes you deeper into the Himalayan wilderness. The route gradually leaves the village landscape behind and enters quieter forest sections.

As you gain altitude, the scenery opens up into expansive meadows and mountain views. Saruwas Thatch provides a beautiful camping environment and is an important stop before entering the higher sections of the trek.

Overnight Stay: Camp

Today brings one of the most scenic sections of the Rupin Pass Trek.

The trail continues towards Dhanderas Thatch, also known as the Lower Waterfall campsite. The Rupin River and surrounding cliffs create a dramatic Himalayan setting, while the landscape gradually becomes more rugged.

The changing terrain and increasing altitude make this section more demanding, so maintaining a steady pace is important.

Overnight Stay: Camp at Dhanderas Thatch

Today you move closer to the high-altitude zone and the ultimate summit challenge.

The trail leads towards the Upper Waterfall Camp, where the surroundings become increasingly rocky and snow-covered during the winter and early summer conditions. The magnificent waterfall and surrounding mountain walls make this one of the most memorable campsites on the route.

Take sufficient rest and prepare for the next day, which is the most demanding section of the trek.

Overnight Stay: Camp

Trek Highlight: Summit Day
Maximum Altitude: Approximately 15,250 ft

This is the most challenging and exciting day of the Rupin Pass Trek.

Start early and begin the ascent towards Rupin Pass. The trail may include steep climbs, snow sections, rocky terrain and narrow mountain passages depending on seasonal conditions.

Reaching the pass is a major achievement. Take some time to appreciate the incredible Himalayan panorama before beginning the descent towards Ronti Gad.

The descent can also be demanding, so follow the trek leader’s instructions and maintain a controlled pace.

Overnight Stay: Camp at Ronti Gad

The final trekking day takes you down towards Sangla Valley, marking the completion of your Rupin Pass trail.

After reaching Sangla, the onward journey towards Shimla begins by road. The route offers beautiful views of the Kinnaur region and gives you time to relax after completing the trek.

The Rupin Pass Trek officially concludes after the onward transfer arrangements as per the selected package.

Rupin Pass Trek Safety Guidelines

1. Acclimatize Properly

The trek reaches approximately 15,250 ft, so proper acclimatization is extremely important. Give your body enough time to adjust to increasing altitude and avoid rushing through steep sections.

2. Stay Hydrated

Drink water regularly throughout the day. Proper hydration can help your body cope better with high-altitude conditions.

3. Dress in Layers

Mountain weather can change quickly. Wear thermals, fleece and an outer waterproof layer so you can adjust your clothing according to temperature and weather conditions.

4. Follow Your Trek Leader

Stay with the group and follow instructions from the trek leader and local guides. Avoid taking shortcuts or attempting unfamiliar routes independently.

5. Take Extra Care on Snow and Ice

Snow conditions can vary significantly depending on the season. Walk carefully and use appropriate traction equipment such as microspikes or gaiters when advised by the trek team.

6. Watch for Symptoms of AMS

Be alert for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), including headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue or breathlessness.

Inform your trek leader immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms. Do not hide symptoms in an attempt to continue the trek.

7. Eat Properly

High-altitude trekking requires consistent energy. Eat your meals properly and carry energy-rich snacks such as dry fruits, energy bars and chocolates.

8. Pack Light

Avoid carrying unnecessary items. A properly packed backpack will make steep ascents and long trekking days much more comfortable.

9. Protect the Himalayan Environment

Do not leave plastic, wrappers or other waste on the trail. Follow the Leave No Trace principle and help keep the Rupin Valley clean.

10. Be Prepared for Emergencies

The trek team carries basic medical and emergency equipment. Depending on operational arrangements, emergency oxygen support may also be available. In extreme weather or medical situations, the trek leader may recommend descending to a safer altitude.

Best Time for Rupin Pass Trek

The ideal season for the Rupin Pass Trek is generally mid-May to June and September to early October.
