About the Trek

The Roopkund Trek is one of the most fascinating high-altitude trekking experiences in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Often associated with the mysterious “Skeleton Lake,” Roopkund is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of approximately 15,700 feet and surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks, rugged terrain, snowfields and vast alpine meadows.

The journey takes you through beautiful Himalayan villages, dense oak and rhododendron forests, the spectacular Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal meadows, Patar Nachauni, Kalu Vinayak and Bhagwabasa before reaching the high-altitude Roopkund region, subject to prevailing permissions and trail conditions.

Along the route, trekkers can enjoy magnificent views of the Trishul massif, Nanda Ghunti and other Garhwal Himalayan peaks. The changing landscape—from forest trails and green meadows to rocky terrain and snow-covered high-altitude stretches—makes Roopkund a challenging yet rewarding Himalayan adventure.

The trek is recommended for trekkers with good physical fitness and previous experience with long-duration or high-altitude trekking.

Important Note: Access to Roopkund and overnight camping along certain sections of the route may be subject to Uttarakhand Forest Department permissions, local regulations, weather conditions and current trail restrictions. The itinerary may therefore be modified when required for safety, environmental or regulatory reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Roopkund Trek is a challenging high-altitude Himalayan trek in Uttarakhand that takes trekkers through forests, alpine meadows, high-altitude camps and rugged mountain terrain towards the Roopkund region.

The trek is famous for the mysterious glacial lake and the skeletal remains historically associated with the lake.

The Roopkund Lake is located at approximately 15,700 feet (4,800 metres) above sea level.

Because of the high altitude, proper acclimatization and physical preparation are extremely important.

Roopkund is generally considered a Moderate to Difficult / Difficult high-altitude trek.

The trek includes long walking days, steep ascents and descents, high-altitude terrain, rocky sections and potentially snow-covered trails.

Previous trekking experience and good physical fitness are strongly recommended.

Traditionally, May–June and September–October are considered suitable trekking periods, depending on weather and trail conditions.

However, actual operating dates can change because of snowfall, rainfall, trail conditions, forest permissions and government/local regulations.

Always confirm the current operating status before booking.

A standard Roopkund package generally takes around 8 Days / 7 Nights, including transportation to and from the base area.

The actual trekking section may cover approximately 50–55 km, depending on the route and operational conditions.

Roopkund is not recommended as a first-ever trek for completely inexperienced trekkers.

The high altitude, long trekking days and demanding terrain require good physical fitness and preparation. Beginners who are interested in Roopkund should ideally build experience through shorter and lower-altitude treks first.

Essential items include good high-ankle trekking shoes, thermal layers, fleece and insulated jackets, waterproof clothing, trekking pants, gloves, woollen socks, sunglasses, sunscreen, trekking poles, headlamp, water bottles, personal medicines, a first-aid kit and a suitable trekking backpack.

Because Roopkund reaches high altitude, warm and weather-resistant clothing is particularly important.

No. Access to the Roopkund section is dependent on current forest/administrative permissions, trail conditions, weather, snow conditions and safety regulations.

If the Roopkund section is closed or cannot be safely accessed, Divintra Holidays may modify the itinerary or offer an alternative route/experience in accordance with the applicable regulations.

Participant safety and compliance with local regulations will always take priority over reaching the lake.
