About the Trek

The Kheerganga Trek is one of the most popular short Himalayan treks in Himachal Pradesh, offering an exciting combination of dense pine and deodar forests, beautiful mountain trails, waterfalls, traditional Himalayan villages, and the spectacular landscapes of the Parvati Valley.

Starting from Barshaini near Kasol, the trek takes you through the scenic Parvati Valley towards Kheerganga, famous for its natural hot springs and peaceful mountain surroundings. Along the trail, trekkers can enjoy beautiful views of the Parvati River, forested slopes, traditional villages and dramatic Himalayan landscapes.

The trek is considered suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness, although the trail involves a long uphill walk and uneven, rocky sections. The Kheerganga trail is approximately 12–14 km one way from Barshaini, depending on the route and current trail conditions. The highest point is around 2,960 metres (9,700+ feet).

The Kheerganga experience is not only about reaching the destination; it is about walking through the peaceful Parvati Valley, experiencing the Himalayan atmosphere and enjoying the natural beauty of Himachal Pradesh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Kheerganga is generally considered an easy-to-moderate Himalayan trek and can be suitable for beginners with reasonable physical fitness. However, the trail involves a long uphill walk, uneven terrain and significant elevation gain, so basic trekking fitness is recommended.

The trekking distance from Barshaini to Kheerganga is generally around 12–14 km one way, depending on the route and current trail conditions. The uphill journey commonly takes around 4–6 hours, depending on fitness, weather and pace.

Kheerganga is located at approximately 2,960 metres (around 9,700+ feet) above sea level.

The most suitable trekking seasons are generally March to June and September to November. The monsoon months can bring heavy rainfall, slippery trails and landslide risks, while winter conditions can make the trail difficult. Always check current weather and local trekking conditions before departure.

No. Overnight camping at Kheerganga is currently prohibited. Current 2026 trekking information indicates that Kheerganga should be visited as a day trek, with overnight accommodation arranged in permitted areas such as Barshaini, Kalga or Nakthan.

The main Kheerganga trekking route starts from Barshaini, a roadhead village in the Parvati Valley near Kasol. The Himachal Pradesh Forest Department's master-plan documentation also identifies Barshaini as the motorable access point followed by approximately 12 km of trekking.

You should carry comfortable trekking shoes, warm and layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, personal medicines, basic first-aid supplies, a headlamp, power bank, valid photo ID and lightweight personal essentials.

It is recommended to keep your backpack light while ensuring that you have everything necessary for changing Himalayan weather.

Kheerganga can be a rewarding trek when undertaken with proper preparation and awareness. However, mountain weather and trail conditions can change quickly. Trekkers should follow the designated trail, listen to the trek leader, stay hydrated, avoid risky shortcuts and follow all local Forest Department and administrative instructions.

The trail can become slippery during rainfall, so extra caution is required during wet conditions. Current access and camping rules should always be checked before starting the trek.
