About the Trek

The Hampta Pass Trek is one of Himachal Pradesh’s most spectacular and diverse Himalayan treks, offering an incredible transition from the lush green valleys of Kullu to the stark, high-altitude landscapes of Lahaul. This trek is especially popular because of its dramatic change in scenery within a relatively short trekking duration.

Starting from the beautiful Manali region, the trail takes you through dense pine and deodar forests, alpine meadows, rushing mountain streams and remote Himalayan villages before climbing towards the magnificent Hampta Pass. At the pass, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of rugged mountains and dramatic valleys.

One of the highlights of the trek is the descent towards Chatru, where the landscape changes dramatically into the cold desert terrain of Lahaul. Depending on the itinerary and weather conditions, the journey may also include a visit to Chandratal Lake, a stunning high-altitude lake surrounded by barren mountains.

The Hampta Pass Trek is an excellent choice for adventure enthusiasts looking for a relatively short but highly rewarding Himalayan trekking experience with diverse landscapes, challenging trails and unforgettable mountain views.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hampta Pass Trek is a high-altitude Himalayan trek in Himachal Pradesh that connects the lush Kullu Valley with the dramatic cold-desert landscapes of Lahaul. The trek is famous for its rapidly changing scenery, mountain streams, alpine meadows, high-altitude terrain and the spectacular Hampta Pass.

The Hampta Pass Trek is generally considered a moderate-level trek. It involves long trekking days, steep ascents and descents, uneven terrain and significant altitude gain. A reasonable level of physical fitness is recommended.

The main trekking season is generally June to September, subject to weather and trail conditions. Early and late-season conditions can vary considerably, and snow may be present around higher sections of the route.

The highest point is Hampta Pass, approximately 4,270 metres (14,035 feet) above sea level.

The trek can be suitable for fit beginners who are prepared for long trekking days and altitude gain. However, it should not be treated as an easy walk. Regular walking, cardio and basic endurance training before the trek are strongly recommended.

Chandratal Lake is commonly included as an excursion in Hampta Pass trekking itineraries, but access depends on weather, road conditions, seasonal accessibility and local regulations. If conditions are unsuitable, the itinerary may be modified.

Essential items include good trekking shoes, warm layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, thermal wear, gloves, a warm cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, water bottles, personal medicines, a backpack with rain cover and other essential trekking gear.

Mountain weather can change rapidly. For safety reasons, the trek leader and local operations team may modify the route, campsite, schedule or transportation arrangements depending on weather, trail, road and government/local administration conditions. Safety will take priority over completing the original itinerary.
