Projects description

The 3 Days Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek Tour from Haridwar is a short Himalayan trek for people who want snow peaks, forest trails and a famous temple in one long weekend. Starting from Haridwar, the drive passes through Rishikesh and the river valleys of Garhwal. On the way, you stop at the sacred confluences of Devprayag and Rudraprayag, then pass Ukhimath before reaching Chopta. Chopta (about 2,700 m) is a quiet meadow known as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand”, surrounded by oak, rhododendron and deodar forests. The main day is the trek to Tungnath Temple (about 3,680 m), the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar. From the temple, a steeper climb of about 1.5 km takes you to Chandrashila Peak (about 4,000 m). From the top, you get a 360° panoramic view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and many other Himalayan peaks. The trail is paved and suits beginners with average fitness, so the trip works for friends, small groups, families with older children and first-time trekkers.

Tour Plan

Approx. 235 km | 8–9 Hours

We pick you up early in the morning from Haridwar railway station or your hotel. An early start (around 6–7 AM) is important, because this is a long mountain drive. The road passes Rishikesh and follows the Ganga up into the hills. The first stop is Devprayag Sangam, where the fast Bhagirathi meets the calmer Alaknanda and the two become the holy Ganga. Further on, you pass Srinagar (Garhwal) and the Dhari Devi Temple on the Alaknanda, then stop at Rudraprayag Sangam, where the Mandakini from Kedarnath joins the Alaknanda. Lunch is on the way. From Rudraprayag the road follows the Mandakini valley past Agastmuni to Ukhimath. Visit the Omkareshwar Temple, where Lord Kedarnath is worshipped during the winter months. Then drive up through thick forests to Chopta. Arrive by evening, check in at your camp or hotel, and relax by the bonfire.

Overnight: Chopta
Meals: Dinner

Trek: Approx. 5 km each way (3.5 km to Tungnath + 1.5 km to Chandrashila) | 6–8 Hours

Have an early breakfast and pack a small daypack with water, dry fruits, snacks, a rain jacket and a warm layer. There are only a few tea stalls along the trail. Walk from your stay to the trek starting point at Chopta. The paved trail climbs gently through rhododendron and oak forest, then opens onto wide alpine meadows with growing views of the snow peaks. After about 3.5 km you reach Tungnath Temple (about 3,680 m). This ancient stone temple is one of the Panch Kedar, the five sacred Shiva shrines of Garhwal. Spend some time in darshan and enjoy the peace of the place. If the weather allows, continue up the steeper rocky path for another 1.5 km to Chandrashila Peak (about 4,000 m). The summit gives a full 360° view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Bandarpunch and many other peaks. It is one of the best views you can reach on an easy trek in Uttarakhand.

Walk back down to Chopta by afternoon or evening and rest your legs by the bonfire.

Chandrashila sunrise option: if you want to see sunrise from the summit, you can start around 3:30–4:00 AM with a local guide (extra cost) and a head torch. You will be back at Chopta for a late breakfast.

Traveller Notes

Best Time to Visit

This Uttarakhand circuit can be planned across different seasons, with each season offering a different experience. Summer is pleasant for sightseeing, monsoon brings lush greenery but may cause road disruptions, while autumn and winter offer clearer mountain views and cooler temperatures.

What to Carry

Travellers are advised to carry:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light and warm clothing
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Personal medicines
  • Valid photo ID
  • Power bank
  • Rain protection during monsoon
  • Warm layers during winter

Important Road Safety Note

Mountain roads can be narrow and winding. Driving before sunrise or after sunset in hilly areas may be restricted or avoided for safety reasons. The exact travel schedule may therefore be adjusted according to local road and weather conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an easy-to-moderate trek. The trail to Tungnath (3.5 km) is paved and steady. The final 1.5 km to Chandrashila is steeper and rocky. Anyone with average fitness can do it at a slow pace. The total walk is about 10 km there and back.

Tungnath Temple is at about 3,680 m and Chandrashila Peak at about 4,000 m. Chopta, the base, is at about 2,700 m.

The temple is usually open from around late April/May to early November. In winter the deity moves to Makkumath and the temple is closed, but the trek remains open. In winter the trail is often covered with snow, so it is a popular snow trek.

April to June brings rhododendron blooms and pleasant weather. October and November bring the clearest mountain views. December to March brings snow treks, for which you need good shoes and warm clothing. The monsoon (July–August) has a higher risk of landslides on the roads.

The trail is well marked, so a guide isn’t required for Tungnath. A local guide is recommended for the Chandrashila sunrise trek, in snow, or for first-time trekkers.

Children aged about 8 and older with some fitness usually manage it. Senior travellers can reach Tungnath slowly or take a pony (extra cost). Chandrashila is better skipped by people with heart, knee or breathing problems.

Trekking shoes with good grip, a warm jacket (even in summer), a rain jacket, a cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, snacks, a torch and basic medicines.

The network is weak and patchy in Chopta, and BSNL and Jio work best. Plan to stay mostly offline and let your family know in advance.
